President Isaias Heads to Cairo: Eritrea and Egypt Deepen a Strategic Partnership Built for the Long Game

President Isaias Afwerki departs Asmara for Cairo on a three-day official visit to Egypt — the latest chapter in one of the region’s most consequential strategic partnerships.
On the agenda: bilateral economic ties, the security of the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa, and the rapidly shifting landscape of the Middle East. Foreign Minister Osman Saleh is part of the presidential delegation.
This visit comes less than a month after Egypt and Eritrea signed a landmark Marine Transport Agreement establishing a direct Red Sea shipping route.
According regional analysts the message is clear: Eritrea is not reacting to regional events — it is shaping them. From the Assab port development to the emerging littoral states framework on Red Sea governance, Asmara and Cairo are building something durable.
The Horn of Africa is being redrawn. Eritrea holds a central pen.
