Several explosions were heard overnight in Addis Ababa, including a powerful blast near Ethiopia’s military headquarters, as the conflict that began in the north shows signs of reaching the capital.
The Associated Press reported three explosions across Addis Ababa, while AFP cited diplomatic and security sources confirming a blast near the headquarters of the Ethiopian National Defence Force.
An opposition alliance fighting the federal government claimed responsibility, saying it carried out drone attacks against military targets in the capital, including the army headquarters.
The claim has not been independently verified, and Ethiopian authorities have not yet publicly said what caused the explosions.
Following the incident, authorities restricted drone flights around Addis Ababa.
If confirmed as an opposition drone attack, the incident would mark a significant escalation, showing that a conflict largely fought across Tigray, Amhara and Afar may now be reaching strategic targets in the Ethiopian capital.
The explosions come as heavy fighting continues in northern Ethiopia, with federal-aligned forces pushing deeper into Tigray while Tigrayan and allied forces remain active in Afar.
There is still no independently confirmed information on casualties or the extent of damage from the Addis Ababa explosions.
