UNITED NATIONS — Eritrea has warned against escalating wars and foreign interventions across the Horn of Africa and Red Sea, calling for an end to actions it says are fueling instability in the wider region.
Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly on behalf of President Isaias Afwerki, Foreign Minister Osman Saleh called for reversing what he described as “war and related acts of subversion” aimed at fomenting chaos across the Nile Basin, Horn of Africa, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Gulf states.
Osman also criticized interventions carried out under the banner of humanitarian assistance and called for a more just international system based on national ownership of resources, peace, stability and mutual respect.
Turning to Africa, he urged African nations to develop their own strategies, move beyond what Eritrea considers ineffective frameworks and pursue greater unity in confronting political and economic challenges.
