In this Setit Media discussion, we examine three major issues connecting Eritrea’s past, the changing international order, and the urgent question of peace in the Horn of Africa.

September 2026 marks 25 years since the September 2001 crackdown in Eritrea, when prominent political figures and independent journalists were detained and the country’s independent domestic press was shut down. A quarter-century later, what lessons should Eritreans draw from that period? What does justice, accountability and meaningful Eritrean-led reform require today?

We also reflect on 25 years since the September 11 attacks and how 9/11 transformed global politics, security, warfare and international relations—including the strategic environment surrounding the Horn of Africa and Red Sea.

Finally, we discuss “Ximdo for Peace” (ጽምዶ ንሰላም), an Eritrean-Ethiopian peace initiative seeking to strengthen dialogue and help prevent another devastating war between the two countries.
