With deep sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved brother Journalist-Professor Aaron Berhane on May 1st, 2021 in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) due to a sudden illness. Please join us in mourning the death of our beloved brother Journalist-Professor Aaron Berhane.

Award-winning journalist, publisher, lecturer, writer, activist, life-long human rights advocate, Aaron was a brother, a son, a husband and father to his three children. He was a mentor to many, advocate to those who were in hardship, and an esteemed member of the Eritrean Canadian community in Toronto (Canada). Journalist-Professor Aaron was a co-founder and editor-in-chief of Setit, the first private newspaper in Eritrea. His passing after a sudden illness is a shock to all of us and a huge loss to the family. We will announce the details of the burial and the memorial services in the coming days.

Family and friends have opened this GoFundMe account. The purpose of raising this fund is to assist with the expenses of the funeral and memorial services for Aaron’s family as his passing was completely unexpected.

Short Biography of Late Journalist – Professor Aaron Berhane (1969 -2021)

Aaron was born on October 06, 1969 in Asmara (Eritrea). He was the fourth among his 5 brothers and 2 sisters. (Four of his siblings were martyrs for Eritrea’s freedom.) In November, 1978 at the age of 9, he joined the liberation struggle at such a young age.. As he was very young, he was assigned in the EPLF “School of Revolution ” (Bet Temhrti Sewra). As part of the campaign to eradicate illiteracy in the liberated areas, in 1983 he participated in the campaign and later was assigned as teacher.

Background

Born October 06, 1969 in Asmara Eritrea. Founded Setit News Paper in 1996,In November, 1978 at the age of 9, he joined the liberation struggle at such a young age. As part of the campaign to eradicate illiteracy in the liberated areas, in 1983 he participated in the campaign and later was assigned as teacher.

His publication “ Meftih” newspaper won the Best Editorial and Visual Presentation by the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada (NEPMCC), an honour bestowed on Aaron by the then Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.
